In 2001, Sony Corporation, the Japanese consumer electronics company, and Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company, collaborated in a joint venture to mass-produce mobile phones. The result was Sony Ericsson. Since this collaboration, both companies have ceased manufacturing their exclusive mobile phones.
The partnership could not have been more ideal. With Sony’s worldwide market presence and branding along with Ericsson’s supreme mobile phone technologies, success was imminent within the communications market. Sony Ericsson’s management base is in Hammersmith, London, United Kingdom and has production plants and offices worldwide.
In May 2006, Sony Ericsson won “Member of the Year” at the Java Community Process Program’s Annual Awards.
Initially, Sony Ericsson focused on the production of high-end mobile phones, which were quite costly but advanced technologically. While the company enjoyed success with these models, to remain competitive, it began developing less expensive versions and expanding features.
While the initiation of lower-end mobile phones brought a wider buyer-base to Sony Ericsson, it also contributed to a lower average selling price. This has not discouraged the communications giant.
Sony Ericsson is a leading manufacturer of mobile phones that double as MP3 players and cameras. They also have sports orientated phones. In fact, with the growth and expansion of their technologies came growth and expansion in sales. For the second quarter of 2006, sales rose by 41% and shipments rose by 33%.
A fairly recent mobile phone model that Sony Ericsson produces is one in which Sony’s Cyber-Shot 3.2 megapixel camera is an embedded feature on the phone. This has proven to be one of the company’s more popular products.
Although the camera phones are popular among the UK buyer-base, Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones are their best sellers and appeal to the mass market. For example, the W850i comes fully loaded with a camera suitable for both still and moving images, email, and the Walkman feature.
One of the hottest features of Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones is their ability to identify unknown musical tracks. The user simply needs to record a few seconds of any song and the TrackID™ technology will process it and provide the song name, artist and even the album to the phone screen within just a few seconds.
Many of Sony Ericsson’s newer mobile phone models also feature video call. This technology allowed both callers to see a live video stream of each other during the call. This is truly the wave of the future.
Sony Ericsson is a leading commodity in the UK’s mobile phone market. The company successfully combines mass communications, entertainment, technology, aesthetic, and user-friendly applications to produce truly innovative products.
